Thunderbolts: Too Many Avengers!

Another day, another new line-up, from Avengers #4

"Too Many Avengers!" The Avengers 3 (May 1998)
(1998/05/01)

Reader Rating: Average; Thunderbolts Interest: Low

Summary: An overstaffed band of Avengers lets Whirlwind escape and it becomes obvious that it's time to trim the team. Justice and Firestar, eager to make the new line-up, go after Whirlwind themselves while an intrigued Hawkeye looks on. The candidates include: the Beast, the Black Knight, the Black Panther, the Black Widow, Binary (Carol Danvers), Crystal, Darkhawk (who?), D-Man, the Falcon, Firebird, Giant-Man (Hank Pym), Hercules, the Living Lightning, Machine Man, Magdalene, Moondragon, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Photon (Monica Rambeau), Quasar, Quicksilver, Rage of the New Warriors, the Sandman, Sersei, She-Hulk, Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter), the Swordsman of another dimension, Starfox, Stingray, Tigra and the Wasp. The final line-up: Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man, the Scarlet Witch, Thor, Warbird and the Vision, with Justice and Firestar as reserves.

Continuity: Carol Danvers changes her codename to Warbird. Hawkeye proves to be uncomfortable out of the leadership role.

Comments: Here we go again, the annual line-up shuffle. We've seen this story a half-dozen times in Avengers history and it does not become more interesting with familiarity. This version benefits from penetrating dialogue from Kurt Busiek and glowing art from George Perez.
