Thunderbolts: Zemo the Conqueror

Not the Thunderbolts, from Marvel Super-Heroes Adventure 2

"Zemo the Conqueror" (1998/05/01) from Marvel Super-Heroes Adventure Game, Adventure #2 (1998)

Reader Rating: Average; Thunderbolts Interest: Medium

Roll Call: Atlas, Jolt, MACH-1, Meteorite (Moonstone), Songbird

Summary: The Thunderbolts return from Kosmos to discover that they are being impersonated by six of the Crimson Cowl’s Masters of Evil. This is just part of Baron Zemo’s scheme, abetted by Techno, to plant his own mind in the Super-Adaptoid, and to take command of NORAD.

The cast of thousands includes: The Avengers (Captain America, Giant-Man, Hawkeye, Iron Man, the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, the Wasp); The Fantastic Four (The Human Torch, the Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, the Thing); the Great Lakes Avengers (Big Bertha, Dinah Soar, Doorman, Flat Man, Mr. Immortal); the Masters of Evil (the Crimson Cowl, Cyclone, Flying Tiger, Klaw, Man-Killer, Tiger Shark); the Wrecking Crew (Bulldozer, Piledriver, Thunderball, the Wrecker), the Absorbing Man, the Elements of Doom, the Scorpion, the Shocker, the Super-Adaptoid, the Taskmaster, Titania, Arnim Zola; and duplicates of a dozen dead villains (Bird-Man, Cheetah, Kraken, the original Cyclone, El Jaguar, Firebrand, Grappler, Hellrazor, Hijacker, Letha, Mind-Wave, Rapier, Ringer, Shellshock, Steeplejack, Turner D. Century, Vamp).

Continuity: Even though we are in an alternate "Adventure Game" universe, the story fits pretty snugly into Thunderbolts continuity, with few contradictions. The story begins with a rehashing of "Endgame" (1998/01/01), and offers the unlikely fun of Zemo collaborating with the Crimson Cowl to attack the Thunderbolts.

Comments: Stephen Kenson’s ingenious series of scenarios for the Marvel Super-Heroes Adventure Game is primarily geared for The Avengers, but the T-Bolts have some significant action. The booklet makes surprisingly enjoyable reading, and Zemo’s plot would make a great comic. A companion volume, The Avengers Roster Book, featuring the Thunderbolts, is an excellent reference.
