"One Life to Live!" Hellcat 1 (September 2000)

Reader Rating: Above Average; Thunderbolts Interest: Medium

Summary: Hellcat’s new mystical powers enable her to become an agent in a war between Dormammu and the rulers of the various netherworlds (Daimon Hellstrom, Hela, Mephisto, Satannish and Pluto). The Scarlet Witch appears in two installments. Hawkeye and Songbird have cameos in the conclusion.

Continuity: A sequel to "Under the Surface" (2000/05/01) and "The Cat Back Back!" (2000/07/02). Hawkeye is in an old costume, but we must assume that his new one is in the cleaners, for there is no earlier gap in T-Bolts continuity large enough to accomodate this story.

Comments: This could have been a special-effects mishmash, with page after page of one magical-powered nether-demon zapping another. But Steve Englehart makes Patsy Walker’s emotional journey the centerpiece of the story, and the tidying up of the MU netherworld is just a subplot to her personal revelation. Norm Breyfogle’s battle scenes are frustrating; more like stop-action photography than comic art. But he does a good job with facial expressions and the abstract supernatural backgrounds. The story seems truncated: Lots of Patsy’s friends show up for the finale – including a couple of Thunderbolts – but they don’t get to do anything.
